Spain built an overseas empire.
In the 1490's, Christopher Columbus founded the earliest Spanish settlements in the Americas on the islands of Hispaniola and Cuba. Within a generation, Spain's lands out from the islands, daring Spanish fortune hunters called conquistadors searched the America for gold and precious gems. Hernan Cortes was one of the earliest and most successful, of these conquistadors.
